I brought out our character and setting cards from the engaged writing bundle and students had fun creating stories with the picture cards.
We’ve been working on voice in writer’s workshop and I was so excited to see this story start with such voice! #reallylistening #nailedit
This is a strong little story opener. Next she will give three details about her Papa and then a closing sentence.
My objectives posters are posted for the week. The ones that change daily are hiding behind the front one so I can just slide them to the front.
This week’s spelling pattern is ow and ou so students are sorting, reading, and writing for word work.
In math we began measurement today. It’s such a fun hands on unit of study!
I posted our teaching posters and we didn’t waste any time getting started! First I talked about measuring our classroom rug. I brought a bucket to the rug full of different sized and shaped classroom items. I proceeded to measure the rug by pulling random items out of the bucket and placing each item end to end across the rug. The students protested saying I can’t do that. My items don’t make any sense. #hooklineandsinker #ohimsogladyouguysareheretotellmehowtomeasure
I introduced our measurement activities for the day {from Mastering Measurement} and the class was bustling with measurement learning and discovery.
Students choose their measurement units and began measuring around the room.
I also saved this measurement activity from our February Math Centers for this day too. I have the same thing in my March math centers but rather than hearts, it is clovers. #didntseethatonecoming
We also incorporated estimated measurement. I taped a piece of yarn {around 2 feet long} up on the board and asked students to predict how many paperclips long the piece of yarn is. After the week of fun, we will find the actual amount. I already had one student ask if she could change her answer. She said she thinks her number was way too large. I was so happy to see that she was adjusting her thinking after trying out measuring on classroom objects!
Although this didn’t happen today, I wanted to share how we culminated our learning on time to the hour and half hour at the end of last week. I love this idea from Amy Lemons! We created a timeline of our day and each student was given an hour or a half hour throughout the day.

All I can say is that you are truly amazing and I want to be you when I grow up 😉

You are so inspiring! Those littles are so lucky to have you!
I wish I could do a professional development in your classroom! I seriously read your posts with a notebook, jotting down notes! My teacher bags get lined up by the front door every Sunday at 4:00 pm (my "shut-down" time). Glad to know there are others out there 😉 Jen
I look forward to reading your posts. So many great ideas that work even with older students! Thanks for a peek into your week.

We're working on all the same things in my first grade classroom this week, too! The ou/ow spelling pattern, measuring . . . Glad to know I'm on track! Thank you for such a wonderful blog! You inspire me to make mine better!

I would love to have you in Denison ISD this summer to do a Guided Math workshop! I sent 6 teachers to San Marcos. They gave you the highest recommendation! Contact me, please!
I love this! Our district uses Engage NY math (Eureka) and I dislike the program so much. My plan is to purchase and prep some of your math centers and supplement somehow!
Thank you so much for this wonderfully detailed post! We start measurement next week and your introduction to the topic is perfect and so engaging. I can't wait to try it with my class and the fish in the bucket lesson from your other measurement post! You are a math guru!
