At Blog Hoppin’ we are sharing our favorite activities.
What activities do we just LOVE and want more of? You know what I am talking about…total student engagement.
This year our Rise and Shine Binders have been keeping my mornings stress free. Students keep the binders in their desks. They write on and wipe off their daily information. Everyone moves through the activities at their own pace! I walk around and spot check or assign a student to be my checker and it keeps that morning “trickle in” time highly engaging! For those students that breeze through and need more challenge I have a section called morning work and they work through daily math and daily language sets at their own pace.
Another activity we can’t get enough of is our word work system! It is not only working for my students, it is working for me! I have 5 word work drawers for the week. {Once in awhile a drawer will hold two activities but usually just one} Students choose their activity and get to work at a spot in the room. All the supplies they need are located in the drawers for them so there is minimal wandering in the room. On Friday after school I just reload this baby with the next week’s word work. I have some different Phonics Packets in my store that contain 5 activities each. One for each drawer! L Blends, R Blends, AR OR, ER IR UR.
Guided Math has been new to me this year and it has been working so well for us! I have a whole post dedicated to guided math HERE, but you can get a little snippet of this week’s guided math here in this post with a freebie too!
Having our math focus up on the little math wall keeps us on track. This week we are beginning clocks and time to the hour.
Today’s whole group lesson: Kids worked in teams to label a clock face and the parts of a clock.
At small group we played ROLL- A-TIME. This was awesome because they were using the vocabulary of hour hand and minute hand correctly and we could keep the learning moving forward after the whole group lesson had ended!
During their math journal rotation, students numbered their own clock faces, digital clocks, and wrote what they are doing at the time they made on their clocks. This cutie below said, “At 5 I wake up of bed for a day with my friends.”

We start telling time next week so this has come at the perfect time:). I also use your Rise and Shine binders and love them! They are perfect for morning work and I love that it is something that doesn't have to be corrected and my breakfast stragglers don't have to struggle to finish or catch up on their morning work!

My Firsties and I LOVE our Rise and Shine Binders! It keeps them so engaged during Breakfast in the Classroom and while I'm checking agendas, homework, etc. One of the best TPT purchases ever! Thanks for sharing the clock activities- I know we'll love them when we do time.
You have so many great ideas and I really look forward to your blog posts. They always have something substantial that contributes to my classroom practice. Thanks for the clock freebie. I'll use it as a center for my grade two's. I might try having them roll 2 regular dice twice: once for the hour and once for the minute.
