Wednesday we are having a Trick or Read night at school. We will all dress up as storybook characters and host a night of all things reading! To prepare, each teacher is decorating the classroom door as a book. Our class did Click, Clack, Boo! by Doreen Cronin.
I called out an SOS to my student’s parents for door decorating and boy did they deliver!!! I mean seriously!!! I love my door!
Next, I gave each child a little kit of materials to use to make the character that they had voted for. It was the smoothest little system and we were done so quickly!
Our Trick or Read night is going to be tied into red ribbon week. We are dressing up as storybook characters that day and night so…..
Here’s my character! (I will wear the cape like the cow in the story) I imagine a lot of reminders to stop milking the teacher….resulting in a full blown lesson about personal space. Possibly another little lesson about how mooing when someone walks by tears at their little heart….Oh who am I kidding? I will probably moo through the lessons all day! Good MOOOOOrning students!!!
Hope it cools down though. 81 degrees at recess may be a little warm for this cow.
I have a cowbell too for some fun classroom management! {whatever it takes} #morecowbell
I shared this next little picture on my facebook page on Wednesday.
As you know we start our day with the Rise and Shine binder and this is what one of my firsties wrote!!! I cracked up! He tried to erase it really fast, but I stopped him and said I wanted a picture!!!
My teamie across the hall made a REALLY cute door too! Check it out!
For our writing focus this week, we wrote a How To Carve a Pumpkin book. First we sketched out our ideas on a pre-writing page. Then we practiced saying the steps to a partner using the transition words, and finally we wrote one step on each page of the book! Grab yours HERE for free!
Over the last two weeks I have been creating my next math unit and I am excited to say that it is now finished! Like my Plenty of Pumpkins unit, I made the recording sheets into math journal size pages in case you want to use them for your guided math or interactive journals. In any case it will save you copies! 🙂
I am very excited about where we are headed in math for the next two weeks.
If you are following along with my math resource, this unit above ties in perfectly with the concepts in Unit 4.
I also have a hands on common core math unit that is meant for November as well. I made it last year at this time.
Have you survived red ribbon week? If so I am so jealous of you.
To be honest…it’s just about my least favorite week. It’s tough keeping up with costumes, crazy kids, upset kids, and trying to focus on all things learning at the same time. We also have parent teacher conferences this week when I will be dressed as either wonder woman, a cow, or wearing my best crazy hair and mismatched outfit. Shall we have a moment of silence for what is to come?

Reagan,
I love the door and am so excited to buy your new math tubs! I cannot wait to get those prepped and ready for my little sweeties! I was just wondering if you would be able to share some details about your math groups, how you plan lessons for those groups (is every group doing the same thing/something different), and what are your other kiddos doing and how you have that set up. I would really really appreciate it! I'm trying to revamp my math time so any insight would be great! Good luck to you during your super crazy week!
Megan!
I will make it a point to blog about just that! 🙂 I would love to tell you it will happen this week, but I can't guarantee that one! My week is set up for craziness. :/ I can at least promise it will be soon!!!!
Thank you so much! I can understand crazy! Is there ever a "not crazy" week after school starts?! Good luck with all of the craziness! I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you! Thank goodness for great teachers like you! Enjoy your Sunday!
You're #5 on the list! How cool!

I love the idea of Trick or Read night! Your door looks super-cute too. I'm sure the kids will love your costume! 🙂

This post cracked me up. I cannot even imagine having a serious conference with a parent in a costume! I dressed up as an egg (my partner teacher was bacon) and realized how ridiculous I look when lecturing kids on random things throughout the day ("It is not okay to lie about that," said the egg.). I love the idea of having parents decorate the door, I will have to see if I get any takers…wish me luck!
Teaching in the Tongass
said the egg…ha ha ha ha
Your door is A"DOOR"ABLE…I love it! The Trick or Read night sounds like a fun activity. I might have to suggest something like this at my school for next year. What exactly does it all entail?
Love the doors- no decorated doors at my school though. No doors on most of the classrooms… ah, to be a product of the 70's!! Actually, I've taught in our "open" classrooms- with walls, but not doors- for so long, I'd be claustrophobic and lonely in a closed room! I love the Pumpkin Carving Journal- thanks for sharing!
Just about the cutest door I've ever seen… Loved the kids work and how you made the little kits!
Beth
Do you have the cute characters for the voting that are printable? Love this and plan to do it on our 1/2 day next week!
I absolutely LOVE the idea of a Trick or Read Night! We have Read S’More Camping Night at our school in the spring, and I’d love to do another night in the fall. Are you able to share a general run down or activities that take place during this night? I would love to implement it! Thanks! And if it’s easier, my email address is [email protected] (I’m on your email list! ).
