What a whirlwind the last week has been as we prepared for school and the final details that happen all within the last days leading to the first day of school! I am wiped out, but happy to say that our adventures in a new year of first grade are just getting underway!
Today was the second day of school! We started our day with our Rise and Shine Binders! We are LOVING this! I polled my students at the end of the day and this is their favorite activity thus far! Hooray!
We kicked off our reader’s workshop today. To begin our adventure in keeping a learning portfolio, we charted our time for building stamina.
Next we began our math adventure with our first numeracy lesson. I began with a blank ten frame and the numbers 1-10.
I asked the students to place the numbers in the ten frame in order and this is what they came up with
Then we had a lesson about using a ten frame to help us organize our thinking.
We exchanged the numbers for super hero koosh ball friends and my 14 boys sat up and got really excited at that point! We counted, added, and subtracted as we rearranged our superhero friends.
Next, we jumped into our first math tubs of the year. I posted a few posts ago about what those would be, but I changed it up when I learned about the students I was getting. I decided to jump right into numeracy as we explored at the same time. I am so glad I upped the academic level because it was a great fit today for our first try.
Hen House Shakers:
Take an egg carton put sticky dot numbers in the bottom of it and a pom. Students shake it up and build the number it lands on with snap cubes.
Tiles and screws, nuts, and bolts sort on colored cards:
Number Sense Sticks
Pattern Block Patterns
Adding Tape Math
Now it’s time for some R-E-S-T!!!!!

This post gets me so excited to begin math tubs next week! Your kids look like they're having a ball!!

Fun In First
I introduced the binder to my 2nd grade class tues. pm and I had planned on taking a small time at math each afternoon this week then on Monday having it be offical in the morning… I was SO impressed that on Wed. morning they came in and took them out WITHOUT me even saying anything!!
This may not seem great to others but I am coming from K so WOW!! I was impressed! Love the Rise and Shine Binder!

I want to be in your class. LOOKS like a blast. 🙂
Hi Reagan,
I purchased your Rise and Shine Binder and my kids LOVE it too! I also bought your Math units and was wondering if you have another math curriculum that you follow or go by? We don't have a curriculum right now and am in major need of some help in revamping my math time. I didn't know if you have had any suggestions? You can email me at [email protected] if you would like or if you have time. I couldn't find your email if it was on your blog 🙂 Any help would be appreciated! I love your blog!
How blessed your kids are…you are awesome! I have to get those Rise and Shine binders together ASAP so we can get started on them!!
So many creative ideas and great photos. Thanks for sharing!
Looks like a lot of great learning going on in that room!

The bags that are on the back of the students' chairs….. Did you make them? I need an explanation! They are adorable- and would be perfect for daily 5

My mom made them for me! They slip over the seat backs.
Do you do Calendar Time along with your Rise and Shine binders?
I love your ideas for first week math centers. What were the children doing with the bolts and screws? Looks like the boys would love that one!
You have so many great ideas for hands-on math. After using enVision for two years now, our administrators have finally given us permission to go back and teach the way we used to. I've enjoyed reading your blog and getting new ideas. Thank you!!
