One of my newest addictions is building up my content based books. I have always gathered, collected, even hoarded children’s lit. at garage sales, thrift shops, and the giveaway piles in teacher workrooms! Lately I am refining my search to fit my learning standards because anchoring our learning to literature provides one more connection to content with language and visuals. {and the real truth is that teacher loves to be inspired by literature!!}
So my new craze is ordering books on amazon to fit my math standards. I have a full container of math literature at school in my classroom library, but this little arrangement below, has been coming to me in bits and pieces from amazon sellers. 2 dollars here, 3 dollars there….I’ve got a little problem– oh dear!
My latest inspiration is this little cutie below that I had never laid eyes on! She could totally be NO David’s sister. Just look at that face! If you click the picture it will take you to the amazon link for this book. I clicked “get it used” for all of the books and they came looking perfectly new and unopened. It also knocked a few dollars off the price.
When I saw the book on amazon I ordered it. That day I began working on a new unit about teaching tally marks because I knew I wanted to use it near the beginning of first grade! I began with the standards because you know they don’t come right out and say teach tally marks. I had to be sure it was a valid unit to create and all! Turns out it hits many standards but three in particular that I put into the unit. These standards are in kinder and first grade. When the book came in the mail my unit was mostly done, and the book did not disappoint! I just love that I have a literature anchor and such fun hands on and differentiated lessons ready to go for next year!

I love how you have broken down tally marks. This unit looks great. My teaching partner and I spent last summer collecting math books and creating lessons to go with them. Six Dinner Sid is good for {higher level} thinking. I really like using literature in math instruction. Glad you created this.

You have quite a few that I use regularly – Math Start & Math Counts have great titles for many concepts.
I love books, math books can be so fun. Some of my favorites: Ten Flashing Fireflies, Ano's Counting Book, & One Grain of Rice.
I noticed that you have The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns in your pile. She has a website "Math Solutions" and there used to be tons of free lessons related to math and literature on that site. She has also published 'manuals' that demonstrate how to use a book to bring forth a mathematical concept. Since you like Amazon try looking for Math and Literature:Grades K-1 and Math and Literature Grade 2-3, both Math Solutions publications. They are very easy to follow and demonstrate the possible interactions you might have with the students. I LOVE to use literature in math. It allows for real life situations to come forward for the students to understand the reason to learn the math. Good lick!

One of my faves is "Benny's Pennies," I use it at the very beginning of our unit on money.
I love Even Steven and Odd Todd that's great for odd and even. I also use Skittle math for fractions.
