This week I focused on two learning objectives in reader’s workshop. I placed them in our teaching area on the pocket chart to be sure to frame my lessons around them. The kid’s enjoy the pictures and can visually see a picture of what we are focusing on. It reminds me to use the correct language to frame my lessons while also keeping me on track.
The standard pictured on the left below is something we are constantly doing, but the one on the right was our more specific focus this week. We used Mooncake by Frank Asch because we are wrapping up studying the moon in science.

Students connected to Bear’s feelings in the story. He was scared. We talked about the reasons for his fear as we discussed the book. We also imagined our own selves in his position and felt what he felt. We agreed that what he did and felt in the story is what we would also do and feel.
Then for writer’s workshop, we wrote about a time we were scared.

Another monster under the bed. Do you see the eyes on the other side of the bed?
As we wrapped up the moon, we jumped right into rocks!
We are sorting rocks by size first but there are many other hands on small group activities and whole group activities in my Rockin Rocks unit if you also study rocks! {Plus fun with making pet rocks and writing too!}
I am headed to get my presentation worked out for CAMT 2013 here in San Antonio! I am lucky to get to be a part of K-2 math centers! Tomorrow’s post is all about math! Happy Weekend!

How do you have time for anything else but school? Do you sleep? Love this post…the picture of the bed with the eyes on the other side is the cutest!

I am totally impressed with your students' writing! They are amazing….which means of course that they have an amazing teacher! What a fun way to introduce rocks by having them sort. Looks like a lot of fun.

Recess and Beyond
Such a great science idea. How do you guys fit it all in?! I feel like I math and read them to death.
I displayed our Spring Break writing in the hallway. A coworker was reading them and got to S's paper…which I could barely interpret…but in my head I know that getting him to put that many thoughts (original thoughts) on paper was a hurdle…now for more phonics…on top of a speech problem. Sigh, lol.
Thanks for sharing.

You Might Be a First Grader….
I purchased the rock unit this week. We have really enjoyed working on it! I am looking forward to our rock pets next week! I titled my bulletin board Science Rocks! I posted picture on my blog.
