Top 5 Things I have thought about recently….
and of course the five for friday link up!
Number 5
April is lacking on days off. After this long weekend I am facing 9 solid vacation free weeks of school! My calendar is just one long academic day after another.
…but where else are you given a purple boa at the crack
of dawn by a smiling 6 year old colleague? She even took my picture for
me because she wanted me to always remember it. I will always remember
the ancient Chinese torture of wearing a purple boa made of synthetic
itchy hairlike feathers. Hey FBI- CSI need people to break down and
confess? Give em a purple boa at 7:30 am and have them wear it with a
smile until 3:00. {P.S. I am blonde again}

My old school in California was built in 1939 and had a basement that teachers used to go smoke in. I went down there once because it was rumored to have cute boxes and containers of retired teachers up for grabs.
Looking back on this, I wonder if that was just new teacher hazing–the promise of containers…
“Yae tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall return with a container….”
I opened the heavy steal door and descended down a creaky wooden staircase. My coworker promised to stand at the top by the door so it would not shut on me. The floor was wet in areas and the smell of mold was pretty overpowering. There was dim light in only one corner. I tried to picture teachers past standing around smoking, but the containers covered in cobwebs were not enough to keep me down there very long so I used my adrenaline pumped legs to jump the 10 stairs in one bounding leap out of the puddly dank basement into the secure arms of a six year old.
For the record, I am pretty sure caffeine and chocolate is the new smoking.
I am so thankful to be teaching in the age of technology chocolate and caffeine rather than the dark smoking basements of the past…

We have a cute little spring loaded squirrel riding toy on our playground. I usually send Squirrels from Going Nutty in First Grade a pic from my iphone once a week of the playground squirrel doing something funny or cute to cheer her up in her work week. This week’s picture was Squirrel in Love.
Here are a couple more from the past….
Squirrels has had enough…

This year I have 13 girls and 6 boys. The rowdiness is WAY down in my room (hooray and halleluiah) but the chattiness is at full throttle at this point. Let’s discuss how the conversation goes with my children and me during our 40 minute drive home after school.
Me: Shhhhhh
Kids: I didn’t say any-
Me:Shhhhhhh
Kids:Mom what’s for–
Me: Shhhhhhh
Me: Stop tapping your finger.
Kid: But it’s not making any noi–
Me:Shhhhhhh
How do these pictures tie in? cutest chatterboxes ever!!!!

This probably was the most entertaining Five for Friday ever!
I am right there with you! April is the world's longest month after having only one full week of school in March. Going for 8 full weeks here til the end of school and I am not looking forward to it one bit!
The dreaded container trap! That will for sure lure teachers in!
Oh my goodness that squirrel is too funny! How perfect that you send pics to Miss Squirrels each week! Hilarious! You have a great playground! Squirrels and a rock wall!
Guilty as charged! Any little sound I am constantly telling my roommates or my family when I am home to be quiet even when they aren't being annoying. They just don't get it!
Have a wonderful Easter with the family!

HA!! You had me laughing so hard Reagan, such a storyteller! Is this a sign of how tired I am this year…I envisioned a purple snake when you said purple boa. Thank goodness it was the one of the feathery (and sparkly!!) variety 🙂 🙂 🙂

Seriously cannot stop laughing! We do some of the silliest things to brighten our kiddos days, like where boas that make us want to tear our own skin off??? 🙂 I would love to be a fly on the wall in classroom. I bet you and your kiddos laugh/smile all day long!

Reagan,
Re #4: Our main building was built in 1938 as a WPA project. It too has a basement, now closed, that has some mold issues. I went down to retrieve some stored chairs when I first went to work at this school. It was August and approaching 100*. Later in the semester I returned for some materials. It had been raining, and the basement was dank, damp, and very moldy smelling. For the rest of the day I could feel my mold allergy kicking into high gear. I was sooo sick for the next few days. Learned my lesson, though. I've never again the bowels of that building!
To see a picture of my school, check my last Tuesday's post. 43 school days here and counting!
