I am so glad to have the first day done!
I met 22 new firsties today. Absolutely precious. And FULL of questions and wiggles!
But we made it! And I got everyone home correctly!
Here’s just a few little highlights as I am trying to keep from nodding off as I type!
First and by far the favorite part of our day today was math tubs!
{free exploration week!!!!}
It’s a time to observe and take notes on what they know, talk about, and do with the manipulatives…
Here’s the rules:
Nothing in the air
Nothing in my mouth
Work quietly
Next, I show them the rotation on my smart board. They were amazed that their little names were all in there ready to go. It was smooth sailing. Best System Ever!
I walk around and “informally assess”
See these future engineers? yup.
This one is wearing the number bracelets instead of counting them.
I’m pretty sure that is a Star Wars light saber…
Oh I like what I see here.
I came back to fashion bracelet area and and found some number matching happening! The number bracelet matches the dot cards! Hooray for learning!
This one takes time and then there’s no stopping them!
Once they “get it” they are crazy for more shapes!
“These bears are in line for recess.” She said. Then asked when it was time for our recess…
So math tubs is only about 20 minutes of our day at this point and that includes set up and clean up. We are setting those expectations and routines.
I know they would LOVE to stay and “play” all day but there’s so much to learn!
I know they would LOVE to stay and “play” all day but there’s so much to learn!
A fun moment in my day was when both of my administrators came in and sat down in my classroom library! I HAD to stop and take their picture. Cracks me up!
We LOVED Annie Moffat’s sight word watches today!!! These boys are saying, ” It’s AT o’ Clock”
It’s “AT:Thirty”. We started with a word that everyone can read!
Another hit of the day was the daily math and language time! They felt SO smart! For now we are doing it together using a document camera but soon this becomes a daily independent warm up. Daily Language 1 is shown here and Daily Math 1 is on the back.
At the end of the day after I walked back to my room from duty, I came in and found all the teacher kid boys huddled up on my teacher table with my sweet genius boy son. It was such a great moment. They missed each other and the LONG after school hours!!!
Congrats to everyone who started today!!! Hip Hip Hooray…We survived the first day!

This is my first year with no little people in my room at the end of the day (in middle school now) and it's rather sad and lonely. This picture makes me smile and remember the fun. Thanks 🙂

I thought the same thing too. They seem so approachable.
Love the pic of the boys, very touching. We are moving my baby to her dorm room this weekend…..can't even think about being alone after school in my room ( she was always able to walk to me after school, even her high school was around the corner ). Never mind how quiet the house will be …..great first day post !!
I love the sight word watches and I love the "it's at:o'clock." So hilarious!!
Big hugs to you darlin' – I know where you probably are right now and what you're doing – in bed, sawing logs!
Tomorrow is our first day, but we are in our classrooms, meetings the next day, more meetings the day after that…kiddos after Labor Day.
Gotta love those polydrons!!!!

For a second I forgot those were classroom pics because they seem so homey. I love the atmosphere in your classroom. Math tub exploration is such a great idea. And the kids really seemed to love it!

Hello! I was curious to know how you have the students use the ten frame cards with the "braclets" during your math time? Thanks!!!! I love all of your ideas!

I found your blog from pinterest. I tried finding the rotation timer on the site that you suggested but I couldn't find it.
