Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits

Teaching with Heart and Creativity

Pinterest Inspired Crafts

For those of you that know what my classroom looks like, I have had it the same for a couple of years.  I don’t have a theme, but I have a cozy Americana type of feel with a red book barn as a major focal point.  I am over it ya’ll.

I am doing a classroom makeover this year!  The red barn is leaving and the color scheme is changing!  I thought about doing a giveaway and the book barn would be the prize, but I don’t think I can ship it.
Tho sorry.

I just decided this makeover was on a couple days ago, so some of the things I have created for my room (like those freebie math tub labels a few posts ago) are not making the cut anymore!

Here’s my fabric and color scheme…
The fabric is for curtains and pillows.  {I have to work with the color palette that is already in the room thus the flower pattern which is going to pull together those colors in a more modern way}  Tell me it modernizes those colors please!

I am not yet working in my room, so the pictures and details will have to come later.

Now for the pinterest projects!

I have been wanting a teacher toolbox since I first saw them during the Spring on Pinterest.  I may be the last one to finally make mine, but I can now say it is DONE!

I am the WORST about throwing little stuff in a large basket only to go searching for it, giving up, and borrowing from the teacher next door.

So I picked up this little number at a store called Garden Ridge.

I spray painted it white

Then I made labels to match my new color scheme and fit the size of the drawers.

Finally here is the final result!  I think my favorite drawers are mints, gum, and meds.
{those are teacher meds like tylenol and cough drops}

 Here’s a little closer view

If you want the drawer labels you can have them.  I am sorry I am not going to customize them, but I figured I would go ahead and just offer them up in case you have procrastinated like I have and you happen to find the same toolbox drawer set as I did.

 But wait there’s more…
I also made these magnets for my white board to match my new colors.  I could not find any magnets last year to save my life.  I have no idea which student was eating them but something was going on.  So I decided to make them bigger and bolder.  Plus I chose a magnet strength that makes them nearly impossible to get off the board.

Here they are after being glue gunned. FYI I had to cut the little brad things off the back of the fabric and gems before gluing.

I had to space them out because they are so strong they just wanted to keep doing this…

As you can see some of the decorations aren’t quite as big as the magnets, but I think I can handle it.  I am trying to just let it go!  Or those might end up stuck to the round file.
Now I am linking this up with Tara.
Better late than never…

I love the choices you made for your classroom. I am loving me some grey and yellow together and absolutely adore you toolbox. You are definitely not the last one to create a toolbox. I need to kick my butt in gear and go and get one. Thanks for sharing your labels 🙂

Reagan, I have those same magnets, but just used them as is. I DO like your fancy ones much more! What are those decorations? Buttons? I couldn't tell from the package – "spare parts"???? I just finished my toolbox also and I love it already!

        Hi Camille,
They are fabric brads from hobby lobby. I had to take the brads off the back but it wasn't too hard. I used sturdy kitchen scissors! shhh don't tell!

Haha! I have this distinct memory of looking at your blog last summer and admiring your book barn. I'm pretty sure I showed the pictures to everyone in my house and no one was into it except me………….. shocking!! 🙂

I still need to make the toolbox too… just trying to figure out where it would go in my room.

Also I love your new colors!!!!

I love your teacher toolbox. You are not the last, I have wanted to make one for a while now and not done it yet. Hopefully I will finish it before teachers go back on 2 1/2 weeks, LOL! Love the magnets! Very cute! I think that I have the cousin of your magnet eater 🙂 Crazy how things disappear in a classroom. I may have to make some for my room. Thanks for sharing.

I love everything in this post!!! The fabric you picked out is perfect! Your toolbox labels are great. I love the chevron pattern. I also love what you did to your magnets. I never would have thought of that! I loved your barn, but know the feeling of all the sudden needing something new. I am sure a teacher at your school will claim that right baby up! 🙂 I can't wait to see pictures of your classroom once it is all set up!

Apply a coat of mod podge to the drawer and set the paper on top of it. Then apply another layer on the top of the paper. It dries glossy and clear.

I have to move classrooms this year, so of course, I HAVE to change the decor, but I'm going on vacation next week, so I'm trying really hard to not start on the room until after we return on Aug. 8th. Its soooo hard to see all of these precious ideas and not want to run to hobby lobby right now. I can't wait to see when you get everything made and done.

Math fact fluency is important because we want stu Math fact fluency is important because we want students to be able to compute complex problems without laboring through every step.

+ Fact fluency empowers students with a strong foundation of understanding in number relationships.

+ Being able to spit out the correct answer is helpful in the process of solving a long multi-step problem.

+ Just as important as knowing the answer is to build the conceptual understanding of combining numbers through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
