Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits

Teaching with Heart and Creativity

Crafts, Chefs, and Spaghetti!

Fun Fact:  I believe it was this weekend last year when I stumbled upon teacher blogs.  !!!   Now I can’t live without them!  It is a constant in my life.  Thank you blog friends!  I have a freebie for you at the end of this post!

Happy Teacher Appreciation week too!  One of my parents sent in these sweet gifts from her son and I was crazy excited!

Our PTA had something special each day for us too!
We have been studying fairy tales this week and I try to even out the stories that appeal to girls as well as boys.  Thankfully even the girly stories are real page turners for first graders so it all works out!
One of my favorite fairy tales is Jack and the Beanstalk.
There are many different versions both in book form and online.
This year we loved the version on tumblebooks too!

Since we are growing bean seeds in Science the students were really thrilled with all the connections…or was that me?  I think both!

Let’s just say that we didn’t have to imagine what a beanstalk was or how it would reach the sky.  We just glanced over to the window!
On Friday we made this math craftivity and THEY LOVED IT!

Some kids were able to do it so easily while others had to really count it out and go back and forth.  For one little sweetie it made the light bulb click on and she said…oh the numbers are skipping and going on the other side!  (hey it’s never too late right?!)

The craftivity and the reading response sheets are in my Jack Pack. {Just click the picture}
 What could be even more exciting than growing bean seeds and studying fairy tales??
visiting the library of course!
Chef Reid Moore was visiting this week!
 (We have a cooking theme this year)
Chef Reid Moore visited in the Fall to kick off the year and theme for the library and “he” was back again for one last celebratory lesson with the kids!

“He” decided to cook up a good book (and student!) By reading Pete’s A Pizza by William Steig

 For the cooking part of “his” lesson, “he” had to kneed the dough…Then massage it flat…”He” also sprinkled it with oil {water} and added flour {baby powder} so it wouldn’t stick.
Finally “he” added the cheese and pepperoni!
But when “he” went to slice up the pizza…what do you know! the pizza took off running…just like in the story! If you don’t already follow Chef Reid Moore’s Blog my librarian’s blog, you MUST!
I got a small video clip of Chef Reid Moore chasing the pizza girl.  HILARIOUS TO ME…
To go along with the cooking theme and Italian food,
I am sharing my Spaghetti Spelling Word Work Center.
 I also want you to check out Anita’s post about this freebie!  She made the cutest meatballs.  When I saw them I knew they would go perfectly with our lessons this week.
{Just click the picture}
 Thanks for being such wonderful friends!
I am off to make my end of the year DVD.  If you want some song ideas for your compilations, my amazing facebook friends gave me TONS of ideas.  Just click the facebook button at the top and check them all out!  itunes here I come!
