Last week we read 354 versions of the Three Little Pigs and had a blast with my mini-unit. My students said reading all the versions of the Three Little Pigs was a
lot like reading all the versions of The Gingerbread Man. (I screamed
and stared at them with my mouth open for a little too long and let it
get a little awkward until I said…”Kiss your brains and hug
yourselves-You are knocking my socks off!”){{although I tend to be a tad bit sarcastic by nature I actually do talk to my class like this}}
I also really wanted to share the piggies and wolf bulletin board that we made on Friday. As I was putting it up it was getting compliments. Oh Yea! I was excited until I realized my camera was absent.
<Insert complete and total
meltdown with flailing limbs, wailing “WHY ME?-IT’S NOT FAIR!”, blowing snot, long pauses of no breathing while building up to more wails, and finally my legs running in a circle while lying flat on my stomach-you get the idea>
Here’s what we are doing next week!!! I am {like totally} doing an 80’s happy dance to Hey Mickey right now over it!
I owe the creative genius of melonheadz illustrating a GIANT smooch on the forehead for making me these graphics! I adore her so much! If you have something in mind for graphics she is awesome about making it for you!
Part of this mini-unit includes making a troll
and doing a little reflective writing about when they act like a troll
themselves! ha! I can’t wait!
Fran suggested making a double bubble of my problem characters!! Brilliant! I made it and now it is a freebie! {just click the picture above} Don’t worry! I added it to the pack so you can get everything with one purchase!
Click the Billy Goats Gruff Preview to head to TPT and check it out yourself. It is also at my TN store
too! It’s $5.

You make trolls look so cute!
Loving this unit.
Yearn to Learn Blog
Too cute!
We do 9 billion versions of Goldilocks so this looks pretty fabulous to me. The clip art is so cute. I love reading so many versions of a story because the kids really understand retelling so much better this way. So the map for comparing and contrasting two characters is a double bubble where you show how they are alike and different. I bet you would like that thinking map.
done and done!!!
Ode to Fran:
Fran I adore you
To me you have a teaching role
You are so sweet
So UNLIKE a troll.
love you!

This is the cutest stuff EVER! I wish I could do it with my kids. But they're too big! BOO!! Maybe I can get a little people teacher to trade me for an hour so I would have an excuse to by this super adorable unit.

Cute, Cute, Cute! Next week we are getting into one of my favorite units of the year where we read a TON of versions of Cinderella. One of my favorites is "Bubba, the Cowboy Prince." Anyway, thanks for the inspiration I now want to make my own unit for that.

Beg, Borrow, Steal
That's it. I'm asking for a grade level transfer. I am so tired of seeing all these awesomely creative units that I can't use with my older guys.
(Though I just can't–I would miss my big kids too much!). I love reading about what you are doing in class!
Kristen 🙂
I feel the same way… this cuteness makes you want to move down the grade train FO SHO!!!
When I did a maternity leave in 7th/8th grade, I had them sit on the floor and I read The Lorax to them for Earth Day. They were not happy about it, but then I gave them cookies and they were fine. 🙂
Love Hey Mickey…and this unit!! I *so* need it!!

First Grade Blue SKies
Your stuff is just AdOrAbLe all the time . . .how cute is that thinking map??? I showed your site to one of my Team First teachers on Friday as she had the same 'dream squasher' issues that you're having . . . she showed the Will.I.Am clip as a treat to the class at the end of the day!! She's trying SO hard to find a way to show appreciation to the little ones who ARE doing the right thing instead of spending all of her energy on those out-of-control dreamers.
Sending smiles,
Barbara
Reagan,
Wow I am truly flattered that you did this. You are a very talented teacher and I love the way you think. Now one more thing for first graders… You want them to be able to articulate the similarities and differences between the troll and wolf so tell them you want to hear something like, "The troll and wolf both…" and the troll is______ but the wolf is_______. I find kids make the maps but they need to be able to read them too. Once they can do your worksheet encourage them to create their own maps and compare and contrast themselves to a character in the story. This is so interesting for them. Then write about it. Okay I am over myself and will stop here. Love to you for letting me know about this friend.
Fran
fran! yes! we are a thinking maps school…and my kids LOVE the double bubble, but they have a hard time translating into writing. great suggestions. 🙂
Fran,
please don't get over yourself! I love it!
Trip, trap, trip, trap…
These are the oldies that define my childhood…it must be a combination of us loving them ourselves and the natural pull they have with little ones that makes them current classroom favorites!
LOVE the double bubble – I have never seen that!!!! 🙂
