This is a fun Activity for Working with Words or as a Workstation for Guided Reading!
All you need is the lesson which you can grab here! It’s best if you print on cardstock.
But if you want the kids to really get into it you can pick up these items at the dollar store! Tweezers, latex gloves, doctor masks, and a cookie sheet that is used for the operating tray.

I keep my lessons in big ziplocs so below I am showing you my lesson baggie. Inside is the recording sheet, gloves, and masks. The broken bone box {made out of a plastic soap dish} has the lesson pieces and the tweezers. It also goes in the large ziploc baggie so students only grab one thing and find a spot to work.
When it is time to teach this lesson, I plan to suit up and act a fool saying things like, “We’re losing him!”, “STAT”, “Scalpel” and other “doctory” things that come out in the moment.
This gorgeous model is my daughter. She agreed to let me take some pics of her so you can visualize the lesson. She is not a first grader, but she gave this lesson the kid stamp of approval.
Here is the part where you perform word surgery saying silly things like, “I’ve got a bleeder!” and “oh, that’s a nice clean break.” You know, whatever comes to mind…
When your students are done with word surgery, they can record their results on the doctor chart. It’s all included in the lesson. Enjoy!

This is so stinkin' cute! I can totally imagine myself saying silly doctory things!! 😀 Can't wait to use it!

this is awesome and so creative! definitely going to use this!
If you were using this as a small group lesson, would you have them work in pairs, or independently?
I LOVE THIS! I hope you don't mind if I tweak it for 3rd grade review of prefixes and suffixes. OOH! I could use it for homophone/homonym review as well. Ohhh, I love this. You're amazing, and I'm a new stalker!! Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for sharing it with the vast web of teachers!
This is such a fun idea! Thank you for sharing this with us! I teach Kindergarten at a private school and wanted to ask if you'd mind if I borrow your idea, but make it into a math facts center? We're learning about the body right now and that would be a perfect center for me to use! I love your blog, and thank you for sharing all your hard work with us!
I LOVE this!!!! Thank you!!!
I can't wait to use this next week. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Reagan, the link seems to be missing. Help!
Hi there! I absolutely love this and I think my kiddos would really benefit. However, I can’t seem to find the link for the lesson. Could you post it in the comments or point it out for me? Thank you!
I’m having a hard time finding the link as well.
